Floods kill 17 in Sri Lanka

The death toll from a week of torrential rain across Sri Lanka has risen to 17 and more than 253,000 people have been driven from their homes, the island's disaster management centre said Tuesday

Heavy monsoon downpours have disrupted life in several districts but Kalutara on the south coast is worst affected with 11 deaths and more than 100,000 people displaced by floods. (AFP).

Seevaratnam Pulidevan , the Director of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Peace Secretariat has been arrested by the outfit’s intelligence service headed by the most feared Pottu Amman, the London based Tamil Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) revealed.

“It is well confirmed and Pulidevan is suspected of leaking information to the government,” the TBC head Veeriah Ramraj said.

Mahinda attending FAO summit

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa is in Rome to attend the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) summit which begins Tuesday 3rd June.

The President arrived at the Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport on Monday with Minister Maithripala Sirisena, Minister CB Rathnayake and Secreatry to the President Lalith Weeratunga. (BBC Sinhala)
